Located just minutes from Fukui Station by bus (Keifuku 35 bus) or taxi, or a pleasant 15 minute-walk on a nice day, Yokokan Garden is a must-see when you visit Fukui city. Owned for centuries by the powerful Matusdaira clan, this elegant house, pond, and garden was declared a cultural treasure in 1982. The tatami style rooms are enjoyable to sit upon, looking out onto the beautiful colors of the trees and flowers reflected in the pond. The beauty on display here changes with the seasons, so come back whenever you have a chance.

Fukui's Yokokan Garden
A lovely, tranquil universe very near Fukui Station

The house and pond in elegant b&w
The day I visited, a Ikebana group was just finishing up
The house has many open rooms looking out onto a pond
Cool in the summer...
But, perhaps, cold in the winter!
Even the ceilings are simple and beautiful
Lovely shadows in the late afternoon
The home is decorated in a simple yet elegant manner
There are views of the pond from every room
View of the house from across the pond
Outside Yokokan Garden
