Furuiwaya is a mysterious area of weird geology and Buddhist statues. You can find it on the road between Kuma Highland’s two pilgrimage temples, Taiho-ji and Iwaya-ji, but only if you look carefully. The towering cliffs studded with rocks and pocked with holes inspire awe, especially if you visit at dusk.

The awful awesome overhanging cliff

A Buddha ... or a hobgoblin?

Yikes, but this craftsman had an eye for a face

Mushrooms anyone?

The pretty Daishi-do beneath a large Buddhist image in a cliff cave

There are odd views everywhere you turn here
