Hydrangea Viewing at Unshoji Temple

Enjoy a sea of blue in Akita Prefecture

Unshoji Temple is located in Oga, Akita Prefecture, and has become famous for its spectacular display of hydrangeas during Japan's rainy season. The hydrangeas here were nurtured over a 15 year timeframe by the deputy chief priest of the temple, and his hard work paid off - when the flowers are in bloom here the scene is nothing short of magical. Most years, the event also includes an evening illumination so that visitors can enjoy the floral beauty after dark.

As is the case with any flower festival, the dates can fluctuate slightly from year-to-year depending on blooming conditions. Based on last year's dates, plan for around mid-June through until just after mid-July.

Adult admission to the temple grounds during hydrangea season is 500 yen. Middle school aged students and younger receive free admission.

Getting there

Unshoji Temple is located around 20 minutes by car from Oga Station, served by the JR Oga Line.

Illuminations are such a simple way to add effective value to a destination.

Completely agree! I think there's a real beauty to enjoying flowers after dark. I also love it from an accessibility/practicality standpoint - sometimes it's nice to go to a flower event during the week rather than a weekend, but work hours can prohibit that. Opening up the evenings for people to enjoy the beauty just increases the fun for everyone! :)

I like when places do illumination events for flowers! A different way of appreciating them!
